Nokian Encompass AW01 im Test

“Cracking along shoulder Borrowing my father’s ‘09 Lexus and he has a set of Nokian Encompass AW01 DOT 14/23 and noticed this cracking along the shoulder. Reading online that Nokians recently produced around 21-23 timeframe are prone to early dry rot and it’s apparently “cosmetic” not structural is what Nokian says. This looks exactly like the photos I’ve seen online. Problem is I’m borrowing his car as my VW has a coolant leak problem and I’m set to drive 80 miles on the highway to and from for a job interview tomorrow. Now Im having second thoughts about borrowing his car. If someone can give some insight as to whether this would be safe or not because my luck is that it’ll blowout on the way to my interview. “Nokian Encompass AW01 All-Weather Tires Woke up to my wife’s 2015 CRV having a flat tire in the garage. The tire was not repairable and other tires were 5/32 tread. Discount Tire strongly recommended to replace all four tires. The only all-weather tire they had in stock was the Nokian Encompass AW01. I prefer all-weather tires up here in Minnesota. I generally like to research before bigger purchases but this one caught me off guard. I recently put Bridgestone WeatherPeaks on my Edge. Anyone know if this is a good all weather tire for the price of $169 225/65R17? I ended up getting them put on instead of ordering a different set. Thanks for any info!”

“All weather tire recommendations? I got a set of these Nokian ENCOMPASS AW01 10,000 miles ago and my bad I forgot to rotate them but they seem to show quite a bit of wear after 10k, ridiculous! So what all weather tires not all season do well on these front wheel drive vehicles and lost me more than 10,000 miles! Seems that these Nokian are specifically made as a discount version for Discount tire. Perhaps that’s the problem. So now, perhaps I need to get a new pair of rims and swap out the old summer tires every year. I hear this is quite a common problem. My friend with an Aryia has similar issues.”

“Nokian tires cracked I have a 2018 Toyota Rav4 and noticed these cracks on my tires. Not sure how long they have been like this but I was wondering if it would be safe to push off replacements for a few more weeks? I drive on the highway (65 mph) every day for about 10 miles each way (66 miles round trip total). All 4 are cracked, pictured is the worst my far. Tires are Nokian encompass aw01 made in 1423. My car came with them so it looks like I'm disqualified from their warranty. Read more”

“So the AW01 have 5/16 left off of just 10,000 miles two years I didn’t rotate them but pretty shabby. I was forced to keep them on the front and bought some AW02 and when they get to 4/32 they will prorate them for me Discount tire! They gave the usual excuse about heavy EV. My EV is only 3500 pounds, how far do you drive? I only have 68 miles range. Do you go in the mountains? No, I just tootle around town and go on the highway. Although if you look at the poor bastards with the Nissan Ayria, they’re also in the same boat.”

“Yeah man, that wear looks rough for only 10k but honestly the Encompass AW01 has a reputation for wearing fast on heavier FWD EVs it’s basically Nokian’s budget line made for Discount Tire, so the compound just isn’t as tough. If you want something that actually lasts on a Leaf, the Michelin CrossClimate 2 has been way better for me and tons of EV folks. If your size is 205/55R16, they’re around $174 each on Discounted Wheel Warehouse last time I checked, which was cheaper than my local quotes. Worth the jump way better tread life and still good in rain/winter”
